I had been planning to go check out the new F1 movie all week. Yet, every time I looked at the AMC website in the run-up to the Austrian Grand Prix weekend, the theaters were packed. I decided to try to dodge the crowds by attending the 10:15 pm show on a Monday night. Well, the joke was on me. There wasn’t a free seat in the whole theater last night.
I enjoyed the movie! F1 is a big spectacle, summer blockbuster, popcorn flick. If you expect anything more than that, you will surely be disappointed. Neither Denis Villeneuve nor Christopher Nolan had anything to do with this movie. A brain buster, it is not.
If you are a hard-core F1 fan, the type who watches all the technical videos online and has an encyclopedic knowledge of F1 over the last three decades…this movie isn’t for you either. It’s pure entertainment, and as such, the movie succeeds.
I watched the movie in IMAX, and if you have to spend a few more dollars or drive a bit farther to see it in IMAX, I would highly recommend doing so. It will be worth the extra effort.
